Chapter 6

Asif, surrounded by his guards, entered through the palace doors silently, unhappy about the failed opportunity. Sedrick had been so close! This was the second time that the bastard had slipped through their fingers! So damn close! The glass of bourbon that the old man had left behind still had fresh ice in it, indicating that the glass had been abandoned very recently.

All Asif wanted right now was to find Tessa and…and what?

Pushing through the doors to their apartment, his gaze automatically moved to the bed. There she was, sleeping peacefully in the middle of the bed with one hand on his pillow. Was she reaching for him? Was she searching for him in her sleep? Could she subconsciously want him, despite her conscious mind telling her not to give in to the need they were both trying to ignore?

With a snort of disgust, he turned and headed into the bathroom. After a long shower, he felt only slightly better. He needed sleep, but the only place that he could sleep without the rest of the palace knowing that he and his new wife were estranged was in that bed. And Tessa had pulled his pillow over to her and was hugging it against her chest. The slow rise and fall of her breasts warned him that she was still deeply asleep.

He'd read that pregnancy takes an enormous amount of energy. The act of creating a human being used the equivalent energy of climbing a mountain. So, he didn’t want to disturb her sleep. But he was exhausted to the bone!

Maybe if he just slipped into bed, he could be quiet enough not to disturb her.

He pulled the sheets back and stretched out. He didn’t have a pillow. She was hugging his anyway, and there were several more he could use. Unfortunately, he wanted the one she was holding. Hell, he wanted her! Why was he even denying it?

With a frustrated sigh, he put a hand over his face, closed his eyes and…fell asleep.
